Travis Boyer will present a performance piece that engages the audience. “Profile Pic”
takes its inspiration from the ubiquitous portrait image overload that floats through the
world wide web. Rather than staring at a remote digital file the performance will facilitate
blind portraits of audience members grouped in pairs. The exercise enacts a non-verbal
communication between the partners and exposes the participants as both objects and
subjects of the process. The project joins touching with image generation.
The performance opens up a critical dialog about the self-generated profile pictures as
used on online dating sites such as grindr, facebook, manhunt and the alike. The blind
portraits extract the psychic aura of the depicted person rather than their visual
Designed specifically for the setting of the performance in Fire Island Pines Boyer’s
performance commemorates the history of the island as a place of liberation and
personal encounter embodied by the proliferation of queer identity that has channeled
generations to this specific strip of beach.
Travis Boyer was born in 1979 in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a 2012 MFA Bard College
graduate. His work has been shown at museums and institutions including Museum of
Temporary Art, Los Angeles; Goethe Institute, New York; SOMA Arts, San Francisco;
and Dumbo Arts Center, New York. He recently did a three-day long performance at
Participant Inc, New York. He lives and works in New York.
